Our Philosophy
We make what we'd want to put on our own skin.
That's it. That's the whole pitch.
Ash & Honey Botanique started with a simple, stubborn question: why does almost everything on the shelf need a chemistry degree to decode? We got tired of ingredient lists that read like a lab report and marketing that reads like a poem — neither one telling you what's actually in the tin.
So we built something else.
THE 1871 STANDARD
Every ingredient we use has to trace back to the earth or a natural process, and it has to have a documented history of use before industrial chemistry took over. Not because old is automatically better — but because pre-industrial ingredients have thousands of years of real-world evidence behind them. People used them. People survived them. That's not nostalgia. That's data.
Here's the line we draw: if it's a natural material processed the way it would have been before industrial chemistry existed, it's in. If it only exists because of industrial chemistry — synthetics, fillers, manufactured compounds — it's out. No exceptions, no "just this once."
And natural doesn't get a free pass either. Old and natural isn't automatically safe. Every single ingredient gets checked for both — history and harm — before it earns a place in the stillroom. That second part matters as much as the first.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This isn't going to feel like what you're used to. That's not an accident.
Our soaps have grit — real botanicals, ground and suspended, not dyed-in polymer flecks. Our balms aren't whipped to a fluffy, air-pumped finish. Our carrier oils will feel a little heavy, even a little greasy, in the first thirty seconds. That's not a formulation failure. That's what an actual oil does before your skin absorbs it.
Rub it in. Give it a minute. Let it work the way it's supposed to work.
Manufactured products are engineered to feel finished the second they touch your skin — that's what fillers, silicones, and synthetic thickeners are for. We don't use them, so we don't get that shortcut, and neither do you. What you get instead is something your skin actually has to absorb, not something sitting on top of it pretending to be absorbed.
Your personal care shouldn't be rushed. Neither should this.
WHO'S BEHIND IT
Ash & Honey is built by a historian and formulator who reads ingredient origin stories the way other people read novels — and who got fed up with a wellness industry that trades in vibes instead of evidence. Every product here has a reason for existing that we can actually explain to you, out loud, without flinching.
THE NAME
Ash and honey aren't decoration. They're the spine of the brand — literally present, or defensibly connected, in everything we make. What burns down, and what's left worth keeping.
MORE THAN A TIN
If you want the deeper cut — the ingredient history, the formulation failures, the "why we killed a product we loved" — that's what Ash & Honey: The Root & The Road is for. Originally two shows, we combined them into one because the ingredient history and the medicinal history were always the same story. The store is where you find the provisions. The podcast is where we tell you exactly why they're built the way they are.
Minimal. Ancestral. Honest.
